FAQs

How can I sign up for a class or know when new classes open?

Classes have limited spots, so registration for each class opens for a specific period of time and closes when a class is sold out. Check the schedule to see the upcoming classes and be sure to sign up for the newsletter so that you are the first to hear when a new class opens for registration. Newsletter subscribers also get early bird discount codes and a special bonus writing challenge.

Do I have to be present for live online sessions?

No. All live sessions are recorded and posted in class for those who can’t make it during the live time slot. See more about how classes work here.

Will I be on video?

No. During live calls, you will be able to type questions into a chat box, but you will not be on audio or video. In some classes, we ask for volunteers for things such as character-building sessions. In those cases, the volunteers agree to chat with me on video in front of the class, but you will never be required to participate in anything like that.

I don’t write romance novels, but I write Young Adult or another genre with romantic subplots. Will these classes still apply?

If a romance subplot is a significant part of your story, then yes. The beginner course also covers over-arching concepts that apply to all fiction such as goal/motivation/conflict, characterization, and story structure, so there is a lot to gain there that will apply to your story. If you are writing literary fiction or non-fiction, these classes won’t be a good fit as they are solidly geared toward genre fiction. (With the exception of the productivity class which can be a fit for all writers.)

I write LGBTQIA romance. Will these classes apply?

Yes. Though I often will use “hero” and “heroine” as general terms for ease of explanation, I do note that the makeup of the romance can be any mix of identities. I also note that sometimes it’s not just two protagonists because some stories, particularly erotic ones, can include polyamorous relationships.

How much do the classes cost? Can I pay in installments?

All updated pricing is posted on the scheduling page. Some courses do allow for the cost to be broken into installments.

What if I’m not available to complete the course during the time the class is offered?

There is no time limit for completing the course. You will continue to have access to the class and videos after the active sessions are over.

Is there homework?

Though I do suggest assignments and exercises to deepen your knowledge of the concepts, you do not have to turn in anything.

How can I determine if these classes are a good fit for me?

Check out this page which goes over the reasons why these classes may be a good fit and a list of reasons these classes may not be for you.

What if I’m not quite ready to join a class or all the classes are currently sold out?

I encourage you to sign up for the Academy newsletter, which will give you access to the 30-Day Romance Writing Prompt challenge. These daily emails contain a romance-related prompt along with writing tips specific to that prompt. This challenge will get you writing but will also give you a small taste of the type of content we cover in the classes to see if it’s right for you.
